Hannah New
Hannah New is an English actress and model best known for her roles as Eleanor Guthrie in the historical adventure drama Black Sails, Rosalinda Fox in the Spanish period drama The Time in Between, Princess Leila in Disney’s Maleficent, and Lady Tilley Arnold in the Netflix period drama Bridgerton.
Born in Balham, London, New developed an interest in performance from a young age, attending ballet school from the age of four before joining the National Youth Theatre. She studied English and Spanish at the University of Leeds, graduating with First Class Honours, and subsequently spent time in Spain further developing her language skills. While in Barcelona she was discovered by a talent scout, leading to work in modelling before she returned to London to pursue professional acting training at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, where she graduated with a Master’s degree in Acting with Distinction in 2011.
New began her screen career with appearances in Spanish television, including La Riera, El club del chiste and El barco, before appearing in the Spanish comedy film Fuga de cerebros 2. Her first major television role came in The Time in Between, an adaptation of María Dueñas’ bestselling novel, in which she portrayed Rosalinda Fox, an English woman living in Spain during the period surrounding the Spanish Civil War.
Soon after, New made her English-language television debut in the Warner Bros. and CW pilot Shelter, produced by J.J. Abrams, before landing the role of Princess Leila in Disney’s Maleficent. She went on to star as Eleanor Guthrie in Starz’s acclaimed pirate drama Black Sails, appearing across all four seasons from 2014 to 2017. Alongside Black Sails, New appeared in The Strain and Trust, as well as films including Edge of the World, Summit Fever and Trauma Therapy: Psychosis.
New returned to period drama in 2024 as Lady Tilley Arnold in the third season of Netflix’s Bridgerton, adding another prominent historical role to her growing list of credits. Most recently, she appeared as Daphne Rye in the 2025 film Mr Burton.
