Mia Kirshner
Mia Kirshner is an actress, writer and social-activist, celebrated for her work across television and film, from provocative indie dramas to iconic genre series spanning sci-fi, supernatural and gritty realism. Her most notable works include Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, The L Word, The Vampire Diaries and Defiance.
Studying at McGill University in Montréal, Kirshner majored in literature before fully committing to acting, a passion she had pursued since her early teens.
Kirshner made her screen debut as a teenager in 1993 with Love and Human Remains, earning a nomination for a prestigious national award. She attracted critical attention the following year with a daring performance in Exotica and went on to build a varied film career through the 1990s and early 2000s, including roles in The Crow: City of Angels, Not Another Teen Movie and the noir-thriller The Black Dahlia.
On television she gained widespread recognition with a string of impactful roles including the lethal assassin Mandy in 24, the complex and controversial author Jenny Schecter in the groundbreaking series The L Word, the vampire-mother Isobel Flemming in The Vampire Diaries and most recently as Amanda Grayson, mother of Spock, in Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
Beyond acting, Kirshner has also worked as a writer and activist: she co-created the multimedia book I Live Here, amplifying the voices of displaced women and children around the world, a project that reflects her commitment to humanitarian and social-justice issues.
